At the 1954 FIFA World Cup in Switzerland, Helmut Rahn became a national hero with his decisive performance in the final against Hungary. With Germany trailing 0–2, Rahn scored twice, including the famous 3–2 winning goal in the 84th minute. The victory went down in football history as the “Miracle of Bern” and gave Germany its first-ever World Cup title.
Rahn wore shirt number 12 during the tournament and was a player for Rot-Weiss Essen at the time. He was 26 years old during the 1954 World Cup.
